There is an option on the phone duringthe  initial setup to disable the background data and syncing. If a customer does not want to lose picture messaging, we are able to leave daily data on, but disable the data on the phone. Also, there is counter for talk, text, and web limits. You can put in their cycle date and set the limit to 1kb. In a months time, even if they re-enabled the data, they would at a worst case scenario be looking at one day of daily data (provided they turn it back off when they are done using it!!). Yes, setting up the data counter with the cycle date and showing them where/how the data is managed is an extra step, but this can make a huge difference for a customer who is wanting that phone or on the fence of getting it, but is concerned about the charges and don't want to lose the features they pay for.
